Celebrity Sobriety
We live in a current cultural climate where the sobriety of celebrities is as big a news item as the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. OK, well it’s not AS big, but the headline about Lindsay Lohan’s questionable sobriety before a 2005 car accident had the nerve to sit right up there side-by-side with all of the headlines about Bhutto. It seemed a little embarrassing for those of us who care what we as American people look like to the rest of the world. A major world event is happening and we are still worried about what a passably talented actress may or may not have had to drink more than two years ago.
When Lohan entered a drug rehab facility, that event made the cover of entertainment magazines and the headlines of regular newspapers everywhere. Almost her every move while she was in for alcohol rehab was mapped by people who call themselves journalists. There are people who will be able to tell you more details about any given celebrity’s DUI’s than they will about what bills were passed by Congress last month. It might sound like I am picking on Lohan. I’m not. Her’s was just the name that was handiest today.
I’m all for entertainment news, in moderation. My gripe is that news agencies see fir to give equal headline real estate to meaningless prattle as they do to history-making world events.
