Education Without Leaving the House
I just finished up some post-graduate work to get certified to teach school this past July. I had a very busy summer schedule, but the load was lessened considerably by the fact that I never had to leave the house for half my classes. They were all done using web conferencing technology. I logged onto my computer at the designated time and the professors held class from a remote location. I was able to contribute, ask questions and interact with others. It made my life so much easier. There was no commute, no finding a baby sitter and no need to put on shoes. It made having a packed summer schedule much easier to digest mentally.
Full interaction does not have to be the goal in order to use web conference software and setups. I have “attended” web seminars where I am simply a spectator at a live speaker event. Since I am not interacting, I usually sit back and take notes in my pajamas. That’s the life. There have been seminars I have “attended” where I was able to submit questions to a moderator, so the interaction is there, but at a minimal level.
Until our technology develops a way for full holograms to interact, web conferencing is going to remain to be the leading edge of how we do business. I know most of my experience with the technology has been at the academic level, but most of the people who use it are in the business world. I can remember years and years ago before my dad retired, I would go in and look around the remote conferencing suites they had at his government agency. It seemed space-age then, but now it seems logically commonplace.
