An Autograph Makes It Personal
Some of my favorite family possessions involve autographs. My dad has a big picture of himself with Roy Rogers that he got signed. That means a ton to my dad, because Rogers is his boyhood hero. The photo itself is pretty special, but add the personal touch of an autograph and it’s all the more amazing.
I collect books and when I can get a beloved author to sign one of my books, I end up with a real treasure. Some of my favorites I have over on the bookshelf are volumes signed by Pinckney Benedict, Joyce Carol Oates, and Terry Brooks. Many of my favorite authors are still living and I really should get on the ball and get out to some signings so I have a better collection to leave my daughter.
I also love to go to the theater and my favorite actor does a lot of stage work in New York. My collection of Playbills that he has signed is a very special bit of memorabilia for me. After I had my daughter, he even sent a Playbill for her that he had signed along with his co-star at the time Sigourney Weaver. That went into my daughter’s baby box.
Having special mementos is great, but when they are signed by someone who makes the item more special, I think the memento becomes more enduring. I’ve been browsing the site Autograph Ink, because they have such a good selection of signed memorabilia. They have some truly interesting pieces, including a lock of Abraham Lincoln’s hair that comes with a reproduction autograph. Their collection of contemporary actors and actresses is expansive. I’m having a good time just looking through them and seeing which ones are valued at higher prices. In the end, I keep coming back to their signed books, though. That’s my game.
