To Dance or Not To Dance
When I was young, I took ballet, gymnastics and jazz. I finally ended up in soccer and that was where I stayed until I developed more of interest in the arts and started spending my free time on the newspaper staff and at punk show in Washington, DC.
So, somehow it had not occurred to me that my own daughter would so desperately want to take dance lessons. She has been onto me for some time now to enroll her in ballet lessons. It is not the time or the effort that is putting me off, but the expense. I am a single mother and I live in on a limited income for now. In fact, I will probably always need to be super frugal.
At the same time, I do not want to deny my daughter involvement in a recreational activity she enjoys. There are less expensive classes at the community center, at least for while she starting out. And, thanks to the internet, websites like Just for Kix offer dance uniforms and shoes for a whole lot less than I would pay if I walked into one of the local dance supply stores downtown.
My real interest lies in one of the studios near the mall that offers a whole array of dance styles. It is a LOT more expensive, but I keep thinking that if my daughter becomes very good in dance, she will want to learn other styles and the community center might not cut it.
