People with No Scruples
I’m browsing the news headlines, of course taking more time to read the stories about Heath Ledger and to mourn his passing some more today. I was a huge fan and his death still seems surreal. Anyway, in the headlines appear headlines one about the other:
• Police: Coroner stole gift cards from dead
• Nursing home worker takes wedding ring
Are you kidding me? That a human being would steal from the dead or the helpless is enough to make my stomach sour.
The first story is out of Augusta, Georgia and involves a deputy coroner who handled the personal items left behind when a 29-year-old woman killed herself in a hotel room on New Year’s Eve. The woman’s family later reported that there were gift cards missing from the belongings, including cards for Macy’s, Target, Victoria’s Secret and a local steak house, together valued at around $400. The deputy coroner was later caught on tape using the gift cards. She has been arrested.
The second story is out of Denver, Colorado and involves a nursing home worker who pleaded guilty to taking a diamond ring from an 80-year-old woman with stage-4 Alzheimer’s and then trying to pawn the ring. The resident’s husband noticed the ring missing when he came by the nursing home to take her to church.
Disgusting, both of them.
We live in a world that is largely void of humanity.

There has been a string of gift card related crimes recently. I work for a company that manages and tracks gift cards, and I’ve been following gift card related crimes on savvywallet.com. There is something about gift cards that people are drawn too. I’m going to look into it.
