Tax Rebate Checks

The US government has been hard at work hatching a plan to stimulate the economy. Headlines this morning are screaming that they plan has been reached to offer rebates of $600 per person and $1200 per couple.

The last time rebate checks were mailed, I was newly married and my rebate was automatically withheld to help pay off a tax bill my husband racked up from before we were married. That did not sit well with me at all. Well, I’m not married now, BUT the IRS audited a married return we filed a couple of years ago and says we underpaid by a LOT. We’ve been back and forth with the IRS, requesting meetings an ssuch, but that is moving as slow as a first-grader trying to read Dostoevsky.

So, what do you want to bet that yet again I will never see that rebate check? I was not the one ho earned the income for the year in question, nor did I even see the tax forms that were filed. It’s yet another financial mess my ex instigated, even if I do agree that we don’t actually owe any money. There were misfiled documents from his employer in relation to stocks and options. Still, we end up being the fall guys.

So, to the rest of you – enjoy those rebate checks. I will just sit and envy you.
