The Evolution of the Calling Card

Business cards are essentially modern calling cards, and I don’t mean the kind of card that allows you to buy phone time.

In the early 1800’s, a trend started in France where the “well-to-do” would go calling of friends and leave a visiting card behind when they left. The trend moved to Europe and eventually into the United States and lasted until at least the 1890’s. It was yet another of those charming Victorian customs that is lost to time.

We call them business cards now, but the concept is the same as the old fashioned calling card. You hand someone you are meeting your card so they can have easy access to your contact information. Business cards are not just for the office bound professionals amongst our ranks, there is a growing trend now in carrying “Mommy cards” to exchange when you meet another mom at the playground or out shopping. People with small businesses or blogs often carry business cards as well, so they can market their products or website when they are out and about.

If you are someone starting a small business, or just want to give carry a car a try, the best bet is to find a source for free business cards. At BizzCard.com you can design and print marketing materials online. They have hundreds of free business card templates and once you design yours, you can order 250 cards for free. You will need to pay shipping, though.

I know there are a lot fo companies that offer free business cards, but the catch is that they usually print their logo on the back of the card. BizCard doesn’t. I think that puts them ahead of the game and it makes for a much better deal for any of you looking for a source for free cards. Your end result is a more polished, professional look.
