The Health Insurance Debate
Health insurance is a massive part of the political debate as we approach the presidential elections this year. I am astounded with how many people in the United States must live without healthcare insurance. Hospitals, doctors, and labs do not reduce their fees for those without insurance and so people are often put into a position where they skip the healthcare they really need.
I carry COBRA for now. After a divorce you can carry COBRA for 36 months. While it is relatively expensive to do this, I have a group plan with a good national provider and the assurance that in an emergency I am fairly well covered and I have the unique benefit of not having to meet a deducible. That helps so very much. I do what I have to do to come up with the money each month. When COBRA runs out for me, I will either be working and opt in to my employer’s health plan or I will be looking for individual coverage.
If you look hard enough, there are options for individual coverage that are ultimately affordable.
Companies like Coventry Health Care insurance specialize in securing affordable health plans with a variety of deducible levels. With the right plan in place, anyone can afford enough coverage to get them through an unexpected emergency without going into considerable debt.
Even so, many people in the US are interested to hear what kind of national plan our leaders are able to formulate. Most agree that England and Canada are not models we wish to emulate, but the idea of some sort of national halthy safety net is attractive.
