Weather May Impact Florida Crops

The entire state of Florida is engulfed in darkness as I write this. Well, not the entire state. If it were, I would not be blogging. I actually have power in my house, which is a downright miracle in light of the fact that the nuclear power stations going offline near Miami have now impacted most of the rest of the state. There are millions of people without power.

Thank goodness it is not all that hot outside right now.

On top of the power issue, there is a line of storms coming in this afternoon. It’s windy and rainy and cool weather is coming into the state. In fact, we may even see a frost Thursday in parts of Hillsborough County, around Tampa.

The National Weather Service forecasts 32 degrees for eastern Hillsborough and low to middle 30s for Tampa. Eastern Pasco may see 30 degrees and Hernando County 27.

Unfortunately, this is the height of the strawberry season around here. Strawberry growers say their plants are in heavy bloom, have a lot of ripe fruit, and much green fruit is waiting to ripen. As much as one-third of the red fruit could be lost due to the squalls and the freeze.
