Florida Might Apologize for Slavery
It’s been quite some time since there was slavery in Florida, but about 140 years it existed all over the state. Now there are members of the state Legislature that say it is time to apologize. It is still not known if the plan will be approved.
The history of slavery in Florida goes all the way back to the late 1500s, when the Spanish used slaves to build their forts. Later, the British brought slaves to Florida between 1763 and 1783. Slavery as a general practice expanded after Florida became a U.S. territory in the early 1800s and plantation owners from Virginia, the Carolinas and other Southern states moved here.
The gesture will be symbolic, rather than monetary.
