Security vs. The Scoop
Somehow, I think that the news media could be more responsible in what they decide to report, and when and how. I could go on for pages as to how they could accomplish this, but I will start simply by saying that it is in the best interest of everyone to help keep some people in the public spotlight out of the bull’s-eye.
There is a blurb on the Tampa Tribune website announcing that FBI Director Robert Mueller will visit Tampa’s FBI office today. The story is only two sentences, and it does not tell us why he is in the area or how it relates back to the people of the region.
All it does is put Mueller in the prime bull’s-eye position for anyone who might mean him harm. Just because someone is in the public spotlight does not mean the media has a responsibility to track their every move, making it impossible for them to travel as a secure citizen. To me, it seems akin to when Geraldo Rivera squatted down in the sand in 2001 and drew a map of where the military unit he was imbedded with was going to move within the following week. It did not benefit the average American viewer, but it sure as heck helped the enemy track the movements of our military.
Don’t get me wrong. I respect most of the journalism population. I have a degree in Journalism and worked in the field for years. Nonetheless, I see journalists who will trample anyone and anything just to get a scoop as lower than almost any other human being on earth. It is not a practice I can stand by at all.
