Pregnant Men

There are two people in the news right now due to the fact they are pregnant: Lee Mingwei and Thomas Beatie.

They both say they are male. I agree with one of them.

Mingwei is biologically male and is the subject of a medical experience in which a human embryo and a placenta were implanted into his abdomen. He is currently pregnant. It is a dangerous experiment. The pregnancy may have an impact on several of his internal organs. I am unsure as to what I think of this concept; though I am fairly confident in saying I do not see it is natural or beneficial.

So, although I do not feel supportive of the pregnancy, I do agree Mingwei is still a male. He was born male. He still has his male organs and except during the pregnancy (which seems to be creating a lot of typically female hormones) he produces male hormones.

Beatie, on the other hand, is not a man. This individual was born female, had her breast tissue removed, and takes male hormones which have created hair growth and some masculine features. She obtained legal permission to call herself male, because she mentally identifies with the male gender. She claims her marriage to her wife is legal. Legality aside, this is not a biological man. This is a woman with female sexual organs intact, naturally producing female hormones that she ties to counter with the injection of male hormones, and breasts that have been simply surgically removed (much like someone who has a complete mastectomy).

Beatie ignorantly claims her pregnancy is a miracle. That’s insane. The pregnancy occurred, because her body was born capable of bearing children. You can remove your boobs and grow a beard, but you are still woman enough to give birth. Nothing miraculous there. Beatie stopped taking male hormones in order to get her period and subsequently conceive. All that proves is that the male hormones only had a temporary hold on her body, at best.

Our society is amazingly fantastical. There is a contingent trying to make truth out of fantasy.
