Florida Gardens

I have been energized to get the outside gardens in shape lately. I am tired of the frequent weeding, so I have started putting down landscaping fabric and mulch in all of the gardens that line the house. I have the ones out front finished. I think that tomorrow I will be able to get to all of the back beds.

We have a lot of fruit trees, but keep them potted in massive terra cotta pots. That way they can be moved when they need more or less sun, watered more easily, and taken inside the porch area when we get a rare frost. We also tend to take some of the trees in when the birds are making a feast of the ripe fruit. In fact, I have blueberries on the porch now so they can do their final ripening in peace.

What I have not yet planned out in the back yard is outdoor lighting. I have what I want in place out front, but I do not have anything out back. Solar lighting works VERY well here in my area of Florida, because we are sub tropical and get a lot of intense sunlight. Some pretty garden lights and perhaps some lit paths would make the yard even more charming.

The fact is, I want to take more advantage out of having a large, sunny yard in Florida. Something is always in season and I want to make sure I grow more and more of my own produce. Eventually, I will put in some raised beds. It seems a shame to waste all of this lovely sun, rich soil, and great growing weather.
