Put Children First

How can any parent even begin to argue that children should not come first? Period.

Osceola County, Florida school board member Jay Wheeler is being criticized, by parents, for his response to people who said they absolutely cannot afford the new school uniforms the Osceola County School District is requiring for the upcoming school year.

He indicated that parents should put education and their children first, and think about cutting back on the money they may be spending on luxury items. He says, “Everyone can afford Wal-Mart and if they can’t, they need to think about turning off their cable TV or stop buying alcohol or cigarettes and spend their money on their children.”

At least one parents calls that “insulting”.

I call it common sense. Nothing in the world is as important and worth your time and money and effort as your children. If there is money that needs to be spent on school uniforms, then I could find 10 ways just off the top of my head to find that money. If people are indeed buying cigarettes and alcohol, those are no-brainers for things to cut back. Nobody NEEDS cable TV or a Netflix account.

Personally, if my daughter and I ate out one less time a week, did not buy soda, and did not buy popcorn at the movies, we could save enough for uniforms. I could find something to cut out of just about any budget and if that did not do the trick, there is still the Salvation Army and Freecycle for used uniform items.

Where there is a will, there is a way.
