Passing Down Gold

I’ve got a lot of jewelry. Most of it is unique, hand-made, locally designed designer jewelry. Since I do not wear jewelry on a daily basis, I like to make it count when I do. I’m just not satisfied to walk into a chain store and buy something that 1000 other women in my zip code also own.

I have a lot of amazing pieces I am planning on handing down to my daughter. I received a lot of gold at my wedding to my ex. He had not told me about the custom his family had of adorning the bride in gold. As soon as the ceremony was over, all kinds of people walked up to me, crowded around, and started putting rings, necklaces, bracelets, and pins on me. I was shocked, but honored. I do wish I had been aware of the custom before hand. I might have enjoyed it all the more.

I could have given the jewelry I received throughout my marriage to my ex after our divorce, but I am keeping it for my daughter. I want to make sure she hears the story behind each piece and her father is unable to even remember most of his family’s stories. Thankfully, they have stuck in my head and I am happy to pass them along to my daughter.
