Metal Roofing
When I was growing up, there was this little trend in my community in using metal roofing for the bits of roof that stuck out over a breakfast nook, or perhaps for the back porch. It was more of a decorate flourish. Now, though, when I look at some of the new construction going on in my area I see more and more metal being used overall for building.
Most metal roofing uses a good bit of recycled material, and when you are done with the roof, it is 190% recyclable. I think in a day and age where people are finally starting to wake up and see that we need to care for the resources in our world this is a huge benefit. Here in Florida, I think metal roofs are becoming more popular, because they are very fire resistant and can often be designed to withstand strong winds.
I’ve been looking at the options for replacing my roof and metal seem to attractive right now, mostly for financial reasons. Residential metal roofing has a long life expectancy, second only to clay tiles. However, it is significantly less expensive than the tile. In some cases, metal roofs are EnergyStar qualified and there is a possibility of a federal tax credit and, depending on your insurance company, up to a 35% insurance savings. Cooling costs can also be less, particularly if you use a highly reflective roof, like the white metal styles.
